Great home theater receiver

I replaced my Sony str-dee 335 which was a 5.1 channel receiver and 100W per channel. The Yamaha 5740 has a much improved power output and a very clean sound. It easily fills a large room and powers my large floor model Klipsh speakers quite well. I believe the technical specifications above are wrong, and it is 100 W per channel. It is interesting to note that Sony reports power per channel but only when running one channel at a time. There is a sharp decline in power on the Sony product w...

Great sounds are what I wanted, and what I got!

As an avid viewer of DVD-movies, I have wanted a decent home theater system for some time. I knew that I was missing out on the full viewing experience of many films when viewing them in the home, because all I had (like many folks) was a big TV and two speakers. The HTR 5740, when run in conjunction with a 6 speaker system and big subwoofer, will transform even a modest living room (like mine) into a true "home theater" viewing room. Using either DTS or Dolby EX, which many films p...

Great Sounding System

I received this unit as a Christmas gift (wahoo!). As with a previous review, I would agree that parts of the manual take a few read-throughs. So, far, I have not purchased surround speakers yet. However, the stereo sound is great either direct or through the Yamaha sound field processor (Hall, Jazz, etc...) It is currently hooked up to some old, but great sounding Advent speakers. The set-up was easy. Pretty much plug and play to get it going. My CD player does not have a digit...

lousy with vinyl

I tried this unit as a replacement for a 10-year old Sony. There are no true jacks for a turntable, resulting in use of one of the other jacks. I tried every jack on the unit, but the unit could not provide adequate volume--at the absolute maximum volume setting, it barely filled a 20X15 room. With a CD, volume was not a problem.Other than that factor, which has caused me to return the item, this is a great receiver.

A super receiver, with excellent sound and high power.

This receiver is an excellent choice as the center piece of your home theater experience.the amplifer section features high current high power low impedence drive. The unit sports a 4 ohm switch, which helps in driving difficult speaker loads,or mutiple speaker connections...the yamaha delivers real world power into difficult loads. Many receivers such as sony, wimp out because of current limiting protection circuits, that are built into most recivers.I use this as my second stereo hook-up,and i rea...

Great item!

I purchased this item so I could run a powered sub (my old sony didn't have the option.). Now i thought with my sony I had some pretty decent sound...I was wrong. this thing blows it out of the water. the sony I had boasted 80 watts per channel (I believe this one has the same wattage, seems more like 100 watts per channel though)) but maybe there was something wrong with it because my Yamaha is five times louder than the sony ever was + I don't have to turn the volume way up to get a full sound...

Great system for the money!

Purchased this almost two years ago. Once you manage to get this thing properly wired, it really is a great receiver, and there are many options to select from, once you get the hang of it... one plus side to the wiring, someone broke in our home a few months ago and when we came home, the receiver was halfway unplugged. The would-be robber must have started unwiring and given up. Hah! Anyway, we have pioneer surround speakers, and a yamaha subwoofer hooked up, and it really is a great theat...

To Lousey with vinyl

Many systems now days do not include a phono jack for record players. And even when they do sometimes the power and sound quality is very weak.I solved this problem by buying a mixer with a built in Equalizer and also a stand alone EQ to boost the power.I hook the mixer to the receiver through the CD input to the mixer's amp output, and then the EQ to the mixer's rec out through the EQs main input. You don't necessarily need a separate EQ as the mixer should suffice.B...

How Do You Spell Yes!!

Over the years I have had many receivers and amps some I thought were great at the time but there was something that I wished they would have or do to enhance a sound I wanted. This is the first that to date gives me whatever the sound is I'm looking for, so all I can't say is at last YESSSS!!!
