Awesome amp

I've been an avid Onkyo guy since I started buying AV equipment way back in the day and they have served me well. After my last one finally bellied up I did exhaustive research to find a replacement and settled on the R-S500. Most audiophiles will tell you that amps are amps and its the speakers that make a difference in sound but I have to disagree. This amp has such warm tonal distinctions and great separation. My last Onkyo would start to just blend sounds at the higher volumes and this unit ...

Very Satisfy

First of all, I didn't plan to write any review. Just planned to look for a decent 2-channel tuner/receiver to listen to music which would fits my need and my wallet and be happy with it. But boy! turned out, this thing breaths a new life into our vintage Marantz HD44 Speakers. It reveals lots of amazing details never heard of with our old tuner/receiver. We listen to mostly classical, but not limited to Jazz, Pop and Rock. So, natural sounds reproduction is important. We don't like the sy...

Great product!

My old JVC had some issues and i wanted just a stereo receiver instead of a surround unit because most media is broadcast in stereo, and all of the music i listen to is also, so i needed a receiver with some punch to power my mid-70's 12" 3- way speakers, the yamaha R-S500 woke up my old speakers, the JVC had more wattage and sounded pretty good, but the yamaha really sounds much better and i still have plenty if adjustability, blows the windows out! A note to Anon of Boise, there is a energy sa...

Yamaha R-S500

This is a great Receiver. I bought this unit because of the variable loudness control. It does make a difference. I use Boston VR-6 speakers for the left and right channel. And a Boston XB-4 Subwoofer. I set the loudness control to the 7 o clock position and leave the Bass and Treble set on flat. With these settings I get great sound. I also discovered I do not need to use the subwoofer. That is due to the loudness control. If you don't have good speakers the receiver can't perform properly.

Excellent receiver for music.

I was looking for a receiver to replace my 1993-era Yamaha receiver. I stumbled upon this receiver at the last minute. The list of what I wanted was clear, extremely high-quality sound, more wattage, low distortion, reliability. I have my computer line-out into this receiver, so I didn't need networking capability. In short, this product delivers, and then some. The sound quality is extremely natural sounding, but extremely clear. The bass and treble pots also don't give you as much w...

Solid Budget Stereo Receiver

I bought the S500 receiver to put into a living room to drive a pair of bookshelf speakers in that room and a pair outside on my patio. One thing that drew me to this receiver was the amount of physical knobs on the unit. Many other stereo receivers in this price range force you to do most of the adjusting via a remote, which for me isn't ideal for what I wanted it for. Setup was easy and pretty much just was plugging everything in. The power from the receiver is pretty good, but don'...

A poor performer that is barely worth its low price

Preface: There is some confusion about my review because Amazon has combined reviews with different product listings. To be clear, I am reviewing the R-S201.I’m sorry to counter all the rave reviews, but seriously, someone needs to mention a few things about the R-S201. It’s an adequate stereo receiver. It’s not great and it’s barely good. The price is low, but (unfortunately) the performance really matches the price. The total harmonic distortion alone is unacceptably high - ridiculously high f...

Love it

Overall a great receiver for a home stereo system. Has plenty of options to allow it to work with both current and older components. Great sound quality.

Yamaha R-S500

Bought an "open box" Yamaha R-S500 and it arrived on-time and in perfect cosmetic condition with all accessories. The receiver is easy to set up and controls are intuitive. Connecting to components is flexible. FM requires an external antenna, or you get virtually nothing and I live in a city. The receiver sounds great, has virtually no background noise, and has plenty of power for my multiroom system although I am using the useful Zone 2 feature to drive a separate small amplifier for outs...

Approved by this seasoned Audiophile

I am a long time audio buff having had various tube and solid state audio components since the early 70's. I have a larger main audio system with some older Magneplanars and I play LP records as well as SACDs. My current need was to find a good sounding 2 chennel receiver to power a pair of 20 year B&W speakers I recently acquired. I was very pleasantly surprised how detailed these speakers sound driven by this Yamaha receiver. The receiver features most important to me were: Yamaha's general au...
