A recorder to cherish!

Sony appears to have pulled out of marketing MiniDisc as portable MP3 players, indeed this unit is marketed as a professional recorder. And quite a good recorder it is, while also an excellent player in terms of audio quality. The build quality is great, the unit feels great in your hand and the audio components are top notch, both listening and recording. The most major improvement over previous generation models, however, is the ability to record and upload in various bit...

Fantastic Player and Recorder

I had an old minidisc player, which has lasted 5 years or so, and I was looking for an upgrade. I plumped for the RH1 instead of Ipods, I Rivers etc, mainly because of the sound quality, and because my old one lasted for years with constant use. I definitely made the right choice. The sound is impressive, the software is a joy to use, and recording is straightforward and versatile. Build quality is top notch, and it is very small and light. I think it deserves 5 stars for sure.

Great for my purposes.

I am a violist and I needed the Sony MZ-RH1 Hi-MD Walkman MiniDisc/MP3 Digital Music Player to record myself to make audition CDs for orchestra auditions and festivals. The recording quality is excellent and the MD player is easy to use. Transferring to the computer was very simple. I used the Sony ECMMS907 Digital Recording Microphone and it worked great. For all you orchestra musicians out there looking for a recording device to make your audition tapes, this is it right here. I highly re...

Near-perfect recorder

I upgraded from a Sony MZ-NH900 (which I still have) to the RH1 primarily for three reasons: the OLED display; its ability to retain manual recording settings without having to navigate through the menus to re-set it to manual recording for each recording; and because I just plain wanted it.I was already pretty happy with the recordings my NH900 made, so why are these things a big deal for me? Because I primarily record my kids' concerts, which are in dimly-lit auditoriums. The NH9...

Best sound quality of any portable player/recorder

To All who are interested in the MZ-RH1,I recently had this item purchased from Japan in silver. The black model is the same, and in some ways better only due to the manual being in english. As for the machine itself, there is a clear definition as per sony's maturity in its years since the inception of Minidisc. After purchasing the 10th anniversary n10 model, then having it stolen, I was hesitant in purchasing another model in the fear that there will be an update that will be b...

Sony MZ-RH1 Hi-MD Walkman MiniDisc/MP3 Digital Music Player

We are not professional musicians just someone learning to play the Piano. The Digital Music Player controls were a bit confusing at first, partly because it is so small. But so far it is working out well and the recording quality is awesome.

Great for transfers, not so great for editing and recording

As other reviewers have noted, this unit at long last allows for the ability to transfer any minidisc to the computer. I really have to ask, though, why should we be so impressed and amazed by that? That feature should have been available all along.I have used many older MD, Net-MD, and Hi-MD recorders. This unit lacks the great "track wheel" of older models and has only a one-line display, so editing and moving between tracks and into folders is much more difficult than older bigger...

This unit is great....but...

I love this unit. It's great. Interestingly, it is much smaller than I thought it would be. The sound is great, nice and full for such a small unit. Even though I won't use the ear bud phones, they have really good sound. It works nicey, the buttons aren't difficult to engage, it is easy to get used to; all the recording and editing functions are easy to access. I can't comment on the computer applications I havent' tried them yet.But the beep is driving me nuts. I have never...

Disappointing

The interface is difficult to use, the recording quality is actually worse than my 10 year old minidisc, it doesn't record to mp3, so you'll waste a lot of time importing in WAV and converting to MP3. The storage size is great, but navigating the contents is an incredible hassle compared to an ipod. That said, this is still great for line-in recording. So far I've recorded several things with my 50 dollar sony microphone, and they've all had horrible clipping. I might buy a better a m...

Mini Disc has reached a pinnacle

Once I solved the software issues, this unit has been nothing but impressive. I gave it 4 stars as I frequently hook the unit up to a home audio system and the unit itself doesn't display track information (the remote does). It deserves 5 stars for every other reason. I couldn't get the software from the supplied software CD to work properly. After downloading the latest version of Sonic Stage from Sony, it has worked flawlessly. The software is simple to use and intuitive - I have yet to r...
