Sony quality, does surround sound well.

Good 5.2 surround sound unit - quite user friendly and includes most needed surround sound features despite entry level price. Does require powered subwoofer - 2 subwoofers if you want to use 5.2 capability but you probably won't miss much if you only use one. Has auto-calibrate function which is handy if placement of speakers is not optimum.

Can't beat this for the price

This is one of the only "low-end" receivers out there that doesn't use those push-style speaker connections for all the speaker terminals! It has strong audio output, but definitely needs some fine tuning... Out of the box, the sub-woofer pre-out is somewhat muddy, need to mess with the filter settings to fix this (I like how there are two sub channels though). Don't use the auto-calibration microphone... it only samples the room from one position with a low quality mic and unless you have a sup...

Gentlemen, in the past 14 months, I have went through 5 receivers, a Yamaha, (2) Pioneers, and a Denon. all had defects or were unuser friendly. Just swaped the Denon for this Sony. Never been a fan of Sony until now. Very easy to install. I have high dollar infinity speakers and this receiver pushes them great. You can not beat the price for what you get. The bonus feature on this receiver that you will not find on other receiver's is that it has two subwoofer outputs. Very user friendly unlike...

Sony STR-DH540..Multi Channel AV Receiver

Let me first say Crutchfield customer service and Tech Support is second to none..I have bought many things from Crutchfield and Tech support has help me a couple times and I can't say enough good things about them......The new receiver is everything I expect from Sony...Plenty of power, easy set-up, calibration of my speakers was so simple and the new HD Digital cinema is awesome.

First 6 months ran great , then sound would climb.

What's great about it: 5.2 works well What's not so great: sound jumps First 6 months ran well. Then sound would start climbing , have to adjust down. Took it back to Best Buy and told it had to be sent out and take 6 to 8 weeks. I could buy a replacement and when unit came back return for a refund. So I bought a replacement and It did same thing after 4 weeks. Org. unit came back and Best Buy wouldn't refund me on replacement unit because I used it, no refund on electronic items. The repair...

Terrible for 2.1 set up's, basic, cheap.

Returned 2hrs after purchase. I intended to use this with my current stereo plus sub set up. Set up seemed easy enough though it has a terrible UI. The sound I got after auto set up was extremely bad! It seems the auto set up likes to turn the sub volume way up to have some movie rumble. One big problem is there was no crossover setting available in the 2.1 mode so, the sub was running full range, and mains full range. That made for really boomy bass that was horrible to listen to. Sound quality...

Only if using it as a surround sound home theater

What's great about it: Once set up correctly it does play loud & clear. What's not so great: There are far too many settings & options to figure out and its not good for an outdoor speaker system The manager talked us into this system stating it would work out great as an outdoor setup. The downfall is the factory initally sets it to surround sound so each speaker has a different volume strength. You cannot get all five speakers to have the exact same loudness until you hook up the r...

Ok beginning reciever.

What's great about it: Good Features What's not so great: 125 watts per channel, ah no rms? Actual power per channel sucks, Plenty of features to do the job.5.2 will make many small speaker systems sound good More power beating my chest and screaming.
