I got the DEV-3 from a different site, but do most of my electronics research from reading amazon opinions. Although it comes with proprietary software, you can view the video shot in Windows Media and the photos are in jpeg format both of which are a big deal to me. I bought the binos for surveillance and I can read a license plate from about 100 yards away, even at dusk. Although the product states you can see in low light, it definitely is not night vision. The video eats up memory like c...

Best Set of Recording Binoculars

I have had several pairs of video recording binoculars over the years. All of them were essentially toys. The Sony is the first pair of any real value. The image quality is great. Not SLR Quality, but on par with the best consumer hand held video cameras. As a camera, the pictures are also fantastic. Battery life is pretty good, but I did buy the extended capacity battery. For the down sides, first is the price. Guess being the first out there with serious performance has a price...

A toy, really

I got this binocular to record birds and for when I take my wife whale-watching. I had the perfect opportunity to test them today when a flock of red-maked parakeets (think The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill) converged on a tree in my back yard. I took my Canon 5DmkIII with a 70-300m f/4-5.6L IS and the DEV-3. I shouldn't have bothered with the latter. The DEV-3 is basically 2 camcorder-class digicams with zoom telephoto lenses. You do not view through an optical path as with regular binoculars, ...

Great Camera for Action Sports

I've filmed my sons Little League Football and my daughters Soccer matches with this camera. It's finally easy to watch and film at the same time. Zooming in/out is easy and I don't miss a frame or any of the action. I've already compiled some great highlights from football. I can't wait to see what I can capture during baseball season.

Specific need for users

Sure, while some may say a cheaper video camera does the same thing, that is not the case... This product is geared to spectators. Those wanting to watch a race, kids playing on the field, birds or in my case airplanes! The feel of this product in your hands is solid. Like a heavy pair of binoculars but solid.Controls are easy to find and the video and picture quality is second to none as far as I am concerned. So why did I not give it five stars... No lens or e...

works very well

hope to use this for getting close up of animals in parks. It takes great pictures, and the zoom is better than I figured it would be. A bit heavyer and a bit bulky, but it will do the job I want.

Excellent sport use camera

Finally a HD video camera with eyepiece viewfinder that can be used outdoors in the sunlight and see what you are shooting. Most of my video is capturing radio control models in flight or racing around a course and this binocular camera works so much better than a flip out viewfinder as found on most of today's cameras.

Works well for my purposes!

I got these because I am an optics enthusiast and into 3D, but I find that they are excellent for watching and taking records of wildlife. They start up quickly and are easy to use. My main complaint would be that they can't really be used in low light conditions (have not tried with an IR floodlight yet, though). If the development team happen to read this, a rough distance indicator in the viewfinder would be extremely useful (in future firmware?).

Not your typical binocular

I used this for bird-watching and though it did not have the optical reach that I would've liked for it's price, it was good enough that I was able to see with enough detail the birds/raptors that I was scouting. I also took it whale-watching and it did get a little wet, but comparable to a very light rain. it was still okay and didn't suffer anything. I wouldn't recommend getting it wet though. Overall, if you've want to capture HD video through the binocular format, then this device is for ...

WOW-- great device

I have hesitated for months to acquire these because of the entry price. I was also concerned about these being rev 1, which means that I (and others who purchase the DEV-5’s) pays the refinement charge and have to purchase another unit when they get the bugs out of this release. That aside, I love the DEV-5. I own a DSLR (a9), and a great video unit (AX2000) however nothing in the 3D realm. I purchased these to experience the 3D and to use at sporting events. I took these out for a family out...
