Great Receiver

I upgraded to my first Onkyo amp back in 1995 (my father in-law still loves it), and have just moved on to my third with the TX-SR806. I've only had it hooked up for a week, but it works as advertised. I have the receiver feeding my HDTV via the HDMI output and have my HD DVR, DirecTV, Blueray DVD, and DVD feeding the HDMI inputs. For best picture quality the manual recommends leaving the feeds as straight thru, however, I have been using the 1080i HDMI upscale for all inputs and have had goo...

Outstanding Receiver Upgrade

Onkyo upgraded its -05 series receivers midyear to incorporate the latest THX Ultra 2 Plus sound processing. The new THX Loudness Plus feature included in the Onkyo 806 is by itself worth the price of the receiver. When watching DVDs, even whispered center channel voices can now be heard above the output of the other channels. When listening to CDs at low volume, no longer is there drop off of musical passages recorded at volumes lower than reference volume. All of this has been achieved by ...

Performs great, but runs HOT

I bought this a few days ago, and was completely impressed by the quality of the sound. The automatic speaker setup was a breeze, and the manual does a good job of explaining the complex procedure of assigning inputs to different components.Negative: This thing is HOT. I mean scorching hot. I'm going to get a new equipment stand with more ventilation. I'm actually worried to put anything near it.Also, the remote STINKS. I had to keep going back to the top rows of buttons to select a compone...

Very Happy

I replaced a 5 year old Yamaha receiver. I researched the Onkyo line for some time. My choices: the 806 and the 876. I knew that the 806 had some video problems when it first came out (blue dots while in 1080p). I was a little scared to purchase. I also knew the 876 had a different video chipset, 10 more watts per channel and MultiEQ XT. Was it worth paying $500.00 more? I decided to purchase the 806. If there where blue dots I knew I could return to Crutchfield and upgrade to the 876. I...

The Monster that Ate Your Rackspace

I really didn't want to buy a receiver. On top of that, I really didn't want an Onkyo--I didn't know much about it and the Yamahas were something I'd had a good track record with. I had to get a receiver because mine was just too old for any of these connections--Composite Video was the best it had to offer. I passed on Yamaha because the price difference at the time was insane.Consider me impressed: the back of the TX-SR 806 is bristling with connectors, just about anything I could imagine....

If it breaks, your done for.

I bought this unit in February of 2009. One day it just quit working. I called ONkyo and they directed me to their authorized warranty repair center. That was 2 months ago. The warranty center, which is awsome, told me that Onkyo said that the parts are on back order and that I may have to wait another 1-2 months. The warranty center evaluated and called the second day I dropped it off so it wasn't their issue it is ONkyo's. If you feel like rolling the dice go ahead and buy this unit. Maybe you...

Want 1080p switching? Skip this one.

Sound quality - amazing.Vido quality - didn't they bother to test this thing?-Any- 1080p video source to a 1080p TV -will- get blue dots in any dark areas of HD content. Not an occasional blip, but confetti like bright blue dots everywhere it should be dark.I contacted Onkyo 3 days ago and no response. There is no firmware fix.I requested the return paperwork from Amazon today. This one is going back. It makes me really appreciate Amazon.com's return policy.I've tried monkeying with every se...

mmmm THX

This receiver is amazing. Setting it up was a breeze. For the nontechnicaly advanced and new comers everything is color coded. When it came to setting up the speakers I came into a small problem. A slight error on my part. So I hope this advice helps others when setting up the speakers. This receiver comes with a mic that is used to electronicaly test the distance from each speaker to 1 of 6 seating positions one at a time to ensure best sound in all 6 seating positions. When using the set up mic...

Superb

Installed in a commercial auditorium (7500 sq ft). It has no problem filling with sound even with 300 people having a party. Our speakers are modest and somewhat small mounted high on the walls (they will handle up to 150 watts each). The Onkyo replaced a receiver that often would thermal shut-down at high volumes. It's mounted in a rack with several other components including video feeding via HDMI a large commercial projector with a 16 x 9 foot screen. The old receiver HDMI output intermi...
