Unstable and Unresponsive

Had these in two offices (West Coast/NYC) for a little over a week. The firmware is highly unstable, even after being upgraded to the latest version from Cisco. These were installed by a highly-rated Cisco partner firm for our offices, and after trying to get the most basic features to stick we've all simply given up. The VPN is extremely slow and volatile, settings do not stick in the firmware ("Hey, didn't I just make that a UDP port forward? Why does it default to TCP when the setting is ...

Verisign VIP One-Time-Password Support on the Cisco SA-500 Series Appliances

We purchased a pair of these security appliances to control VPN access to our main company HQ and a remote office. One of the big attractions of using this device over the IOS-based firewall included in our standard Cisco router is that the security appliance supports Verisign's VIP (Verisign Identity Protection) one-time password authentication protocol. The Verisign VIP system uses a physical token (similar to an RSA SecureID token) to generate time-tagged one-time passwords. Alternatively,...

Powerful SOHO Router

I bought the SA540 for our home office. It is one powerful, capable, and robust SOHO/SMB router. It has every VPN capability you could ever ask for in a router of this price range. We use the IPSec VPN functionality to VPN into our home office via our iPhones, iPad, and Macbook Pros. It takes two separate IPSec Policies to do this, but using the built-in VPN wizard makes setting up the VPN policies very easy. We also use the SSL VPN functionality to VPN into our home office via our Windows Ul...

Cisco Security Appliance

It was tricky to get this to work with our network that was built on a shoestring, but after a couple support calls to Cisco and bringing in a specialist, it works just fine. It seems that Cisco doesn't offer the support for this type of product until you start spending lots and lots of money. You just have to figure it out on your own.

Clearly not a Cisco Product worth owning

This device was a complete disaster in my application.Among various issues;- VLAN support was unstable- The device crashed at least once a week- Both memory and CPU usage remained very high without complex features enabled- There is no command line interface.- Commercial SSL Certificate purchased from GeoTrust did not work.- Device crashed so badly one time that the Unit needed to be factory reset and reconfigured.- Telephone / Small Business support was verging on useless for issues. In short, d...

Good for the single small business office

I have been an IT consultant for over 12 years. I have installed and maintainted easily over 1000 firewalls over the years. The market for a good small business firewall is not very good. Fortinets were OK the last I looked at one about 5 years ago, and so were sonicwalls, but overall nothing would wow you for the price range of $300-$400. Back in the mid-2000's Secure Computing made their Snap Gear firewalls which were awesome and you could buy them for $300! For business' with 50 users an...

Easy setup no problems

Firewall is easy to manage. I'm using it for a VPN tunnel as well. Great product for your small business needs.

could use more granular firewall rules. Can be kind of clunky to work with the UI. For small business it is ok; however you do need to know what you are doing to get it configured correctly.

I am actually using the SA540, the bigger brother to the 520. It works well. We chose this because we have 2 internet connections and this box will do failover AND load-balancing. Make sure you update the software on the SA series to the latest. Early builds had a lot of bugs, but they have worked most of them out and it is very solid. We have about 100 users going through this for internet access as well as inbound hosting traffic.
