These are a no brainer

I use my 18*50s for star gazing. I own a meade 8" Schmidt cas and these binocs are my joy when under the stars. Don't let the weight scare you. Clear perfect views..... You bet. Comfortable to hold. Would not be happy without them.

10+ years and still going strong

As a casual astronomy buff, the Canon 18x50 image-stabilized binocs are incredible. Looking at the stars is such a pleasure - great Canon optics. But it's the stabilization feature that stands out - I find something interesting (jittering away) then hit the IS "on" button and a solid "click" as the motors spin up and lock the image rock-solid. The binocs get heavy and I find I put them down to rest my arms just about as the 5-minute run time expires (just press the on button again for another...

Glad I Bought Them

My main interest is in astronomy. I have had the Canon 10X30 IS Binocs for awhile and have been very happy. So I decided to take the (substantially more expensive) plunge and get either the 15x50 or 18x50 IS. After reviewing some info on various forums I decided on the 15x50 version. They are outstanding! Sharp, clear optics. Of course the IS sytem works extremely well. As with all such systems, they eliminate the "jiggle" that ruins the view with binocs of about 10x or greater, but there is stil...

Best long-range hand-held binos made.

Being able to read the names on ships a mile or two distant hand-held with a smooth, clear image indicates the quality of the Canon glass and its IS system. As others have noted, the eye cups are uncomfortable and fail to block bright light from the side. B & H sells the Zacuto Z-Finder V2 Protective Upgrade kit Z-FPU for pro movie cameras and buying 2 sets will be a real welcome improvement to the 18 x 50 orignal eyecups. Just fold the the Canon eyecups back and slip on the LARGE, soft Z...

Amazing performance - a few nagging issues

I purchased these binoculars for my dad for Christmas. I was replacing a garbage pair of 8x36 binoculars that had to be at least 20 years old. Before purchasing, I went to Cabella's to check them out in person. If you're nervous about dropping this much money on binoculars without testing them, head to a local Cabella's store. A note, Cabellas wanted $1299 for these binoculars. I paid $850 on Amazon. When I tested the binoculars in the store, I was blown away by the quality of how sharp the ...

Great for backyard astronomy

I have recently purchased the Canon IS 15x50 binoculars for backyard astronomy. I wanted enough "power" to be able to see interesting things without needing to set up a telescope. I researched and read a lot before making the purchase. The binoculars are great! The stabilization makes it possible to get a clear, shake-free view. So far I have been enjoying Jupiter and its moons, double stars, star clusters, and even some Messier objects. As a treat, various meteors flash across, and satell...

Excellent product, nearly perfect

Great product. My use for these binoculars is casual use on vacation, and general all purpose in my home state of Alaska where there are a multitude of occasions to use binoculars. I have found the Image Stabilization to be an amazing asset for a powerful 18x50 binocular. It clearly allowed me to see Jupiter and a couple moons, and the surface of Earth's moon was more detailed than ever before on a trip to Maui. Also breaching humpback whales off Molokini as I stood on Maui shoreline. Overall th...

Outstanding. Amazing. Terrific. Any questions?

I've had these binocs (Canon 15x50 IS) for two weeks now and am regretting my purchase . . . . regretting that I didn't buy them years ago, that is! So far I have put them to work for aircraft spotting, watching hawks soar high overhead, looking at the moon, and general observation of distant terrain. These are by far the best optical instrument I've ever had the pleasure to use. The Image Stabilizer feature is truly outstanding. It allows you to really reach in on astounding views, and enjoy th...

Great replacement for a telescope

I bought a little Meade telescope for planet gazing, but the setup took so long I hardly ever used it. So I sold it and bought the 18X50 IS binos...and they're superb. Just point, press the button, and the image is rock solid. I've seen 4 moons around Jupiter, the rings of Saturn. I also use them for wild life watching - and they're just marvellous. A couple of small minuses: 1) I think (and I could be imagining it) images have a faint yellow cast 2) Against some backgrounds (eg birds agains...
