Excellent Tube Mic

This mic by APEX is an excellent example of workmanship on a budget. It contains the exact same electronics as the higher priced R-F-T Telefunken M16. The tube in the 460 is actually quieter than the M16's tube. If you want the sound of a classic tube mic, but don't want to break your piggy bank, this is the mic for you.

Amazing.

The APEX460 condenser microphone is an amazing mic for its price. I ordered the mic looking for some sound quality clearer than my sm-57 for recording quality, and this mic has left me fully satisfied. I'd recommend it to anybody looking to step up their recording game. I use the mic for some singer/songwriter acoustic and vocal stuff, and it works perfectly.

I like the product, it's everything I expected it to be, but customs screwed me over...

So the Apex460 is everything you can expect it to be. It's a cheap Chinese multi-polar pattern Tube Condenser microphone. Performing as you would suspect it would, for this price it's a wonderfull microphone. But it's a great base for modifications, that's why people buy this microphone in the first place, as a donor mic to build a C-12 clone, or adapt the original circuitry so it becomes a better microphone. Heck, the original Telefunken M16 was exactly the same microphone, but was sold for wel...

Good for the price

The Apex 460 is manufactured offshore to meet an aggressive price point. Its sound is necessarily compromised. In a sense, you get a lot for the ~$190-$250 that you spend -- multiple patterns, shockmount, tube mic -- but honestly this is not a great-sounding microphone. The stock capsule is an undersized version of the Neumann K67. It is excessively bright and thin on top, and anemic in the lows. The circuit is flawed; the tube is starved of power, and some of the capacitors have incorrect value...

quality control!

I'm amazed at what you get for $189 at Amazon or wherever. Case, power supply, selectable patterns, nice microphone chassis. In its stock form this mic sounds "ok" or "pretty good" but, install a peluso CEK-12 and T-14/1, a low noise/low microphonics 6072a, and rework the circuit to your liking using the C-12, C-24, or ELA M 251 as starting points, and, you have a truly spectacular microphone, i.e. "Otherwordly." Rip out the inner meshes in the headbasket, too, for the AKG type circuits. Al...

Not the best mic by far

Maybe i got a bad mic but I bought this mic for the purpose of modifying it. I did noticed the housing wasn't as sturdy as other mics i've owned (nady 1050). The writing on the mic were kinda just inked on, it was engraved on the housing. Before I did anything I recorded some vocals & notice the mic sounded thin & unimpressive. I continued to modify it by swapping the tube out for a better one. I notice it was still giving a thin sound. I then replaced the capsule & still no good.

APEX 460 REVIEW

I FOUND THE APEX 460 TUBE MIC TO BE COMPARABLE TO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE STUDIO MICS.I HAVE ONLY USED IT FOR VOCALS SO FAR AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE SWEATSOUND.THE MIC IS VERY QUIET WITH VERY LITTLE OR NO NOISE AT ALL.THIS MIC IS A KEEPER AND I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH MINE.
